R454B Ducted Heat Pumps Are Reshaping the North American HVAC Market

What the refrigerant transition means for HVAC distributors, contractors and system buyers

The North American residential and light commercial HVAC market is moving rapidly toward lower-GWP refrigerant platforms, creating new requirements for equipment selection, system matching, installation practices and contractor training.

The HVAC Refrigerant Transition Is Now Affecting Real Purchasing Decisions

The transition away from higher-GWP refrigerants is no longer only a future industry discussion. It is now influencing which residential and light commercial HVAC systems manufacturers develop, which products distributors stock and which equipment contractors specify for new projects.

In the United States, current EPA Technology Transitions requirements establish a maximum global warming potential of 700 for new residential and light commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems.

This has accelerated the development and adoption of lower-GWP refrigerant platforms, including R454B, across central air-conditioning and heat-pump product lines.

Market Direction

For distributors and contractors, the transition is increasingly about more than refrigerant. It affects matched equipment, safety controls, installation procedures, technical documentation and long-term product planning.

R410A Equipment Has Not Disappeared Overnight

The refrigerant transition should not be interpreted as an immediate disappearance of every existing R410A product from the market.

Current U.S. rules allow qualifying residential and light commercial equipment manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025 to continue to be installed while existing inventory remains available.

R410A components may also continue to play an important role in servicing existing legacy systems.

However, manufacturers and importers developing new residential and light commercial HVAC equipment are increasingly moving toward refrigerants that comply with the new lower-GWP requirements.

Why R454B Has Become an Important Ducted Heat Pump Platform

R454B is being used in a new generation of central ducted air conditioners and heat pumps because it provides a lower-GWP alternative for equipment designed specifically for modern refrigerant requirements.

For HVAC buyers, however, moving from R410A to R454B involves more than changing the refrigerant name on the product label.

The complete system must be considered:

  • Outdoor heat pump or condensing unit
  • Indoor air handler or evaporator coil
  • Refrigerant controls and metering devices
  • Safety and mitigation functions where required
  • Thermostat and control compatibility
  • Electrical specifications
  • Airflow and duct-system performance
  • Applicable certification and technical documentation

A2L Refrigerants Change the Installation Conversation

R454B is classified as an A2L refrigerant. This means that equipment and installation practices must be designed around the characteristics of mildly flammable refrigerants.

Depending on equipment design, refrigerant charge, application and applicable requirements, systems may include refrigerant detection, mitigation controls or other safety functions.

For contractors, this makes product documentation and installation training more important than before.

Important for Contractors

R454B should only be used in equipment specifically designed for the refrigerant. It should not be treated as a simple drop-in replacement for an existing R410A system.

Matched Outdoor Units and Air Handlers Are Becoming More Important

A central HVAC system should be evaluated as a complete matched system rather than as a collection of independent components.

The outdoor unit, indoor air handler, evaporator coil, refrigerant controls, airflow and thermostat all influence system performance.

For distributors and contractors serving the North American market, system matching and available certification documentation can therefore become an important part of purchasing decisions.

The Market Is Also Moving Toward Inverter and Variable-Airflow Systems

The refrigerant transition is occurring at the same time as another major HVAC trend: the increasing use of inverter compressors and variable-speed indoor blowers.

Instead of operating only at full capacity, inverter systems can reduce compressor output during part-load conditions.

ECM air handlers can also provide more flexible airflow control than conventional fixed-speed blower systems.

This creates new opportunities for:

  • Improved part-load efficiency
  • More stable indoor temperatures
  • Lower operating noise
  • Better airflow management
  • Room-by-room HVAC zoning

Smart Zoning Is Becoming a Natural Extension of Ducted Inverter HVAC

Traditional zoning systems often rely mainly on opening and closing motorized dampers. Modern inverter and ECM-based systems allow a more coordinated approach.

YUJU Air Basic™ can integrate room thermostats, motorized or modulating dampers and variable airflow control for central ducted HVAC applications.

Smart Zoning Control Concept

Room Thermostat → Modulating Damper → Zone Airflow Demand → ECM Indoor Fan → Central Return Temperature → Inverter HVAC Capacity Adjustment

When individual rooms reach their set temperature, the zoning system can reduce airflow to those zones. The indoor fan can then reduce total airflow, while the inverter heat pump adjusts refrigeration output according to return-air temperature and its internal control logic.

Duct Design Remains Critical

More advanced HVAC equipment cannot compensate for a poorly designed air-distribution system.

Correct airflow, duct sizing, return-air design and external static pressure remain essential for system performance.

YUJU AIRFORM™ supports project-based evaluation of:

  • Room-by-room cooling and heating load
  • Required airflow
  • Main and branch duct sizing
  • Duct velocity
  • Diffuser sizing
  • Return-air requirements
  • External static pressure
  • Smart zoning airflow allocation

This allows the HVAC system to be selected around actual building requirements rather than nominal tonnage alone.

What HVAC Distributors and Contractors Should Ask Suppliers

As R454B equipment becomes more common, buyers should ask more detailed questions before purchasing a ducted heat pump system.

Question Why It Matters
Is the outdoor unit matched with the air handler? Capacity, efficiency and refrigerant compatibility depend on system matching.
What certification documentation is available? Destination-market projects may require specific technical or certification documents.
What is the blower airflow and ESP capability? The air handler must overcome the resistance of the actual duct system.
Is smart zoning supported? Inverter compressors and ECM blowers can support more advanced part-load control.
What A2L safety functions are included? Requirements may vary by equipment configuration and application.
