What Airflow Does a 40 Ton Rooftop HVAC Unit Require?
A 40 Ton rooftop HVAC unit does not have one universal airflow value.
A commonly used preliminary reference for comfort cooling is approximately 400 CFM per ton, which would suggest around 16,000 CFM for a 40 Ton system.
However, this should only be treated as an initial engineering reference.
Actual airflow may vary according to:
- Cooling load
- Supply-air temperature
- Indoor humidity requirements
- Outdoor-air quantity
- Building occupancy
- Duct resistance
- External static pressure
- Equipment coil characteristics
- Application type
Important
For large commercial RTUs, airflow and external static pressure should always be evaluated together.
For replacement projects, the existing design airflow and duct-system resistance should be reviewed before selecting the new rooftop unit.
